Canada's economy added 90,000 jobs in August, the third consecutive monthly increase, Statistics Canada reported Friday. The unemployment rate fell to 7.1 per cent for the month, compared with 7.5 per cent in July, bringing the rate to the lowest level since the onset of the pandemic last year. Gains were concentrated in full-time work and in the hard-hit service sector, led by gains in accommodation and food services as restrictions eased in much of the country. Alberta top doctor says 84% of those who died of COVID-19 not fully vaccinated

Many Alberta doctors are warning that COVID-19 has reached a critical point in Alberta, as hospitals grapple with increased ICU admissions and deaths. The province reported Thursday that 679 people were being treated in hospital with COVID, up from 647 on Wednesday. There were also nine new deaths reported in the past 24 hours, which is a decrease from Wednesday's report of 18 deaths — the highest number in one day since the second wave in January. The majority of those 18 deaths had pre-existing conditions and they ranged in age from their 30s to 90s, according to data from Alberta Health.
